If you’re one of the thousands of Kiwi e-commerce business owners using both Shopify and Mailchimp, you’ll no doubt have heard the two platforms have announced their impending separation.

Don’t worry, it’s nothing you’ve done wrong. Sometimes these things just don’t work out.

Like gossip mags peddle celeb breakups, various tech industry watchdogs have been gleefully reporting on the ‘they said” / “they said” of the whole drama. Basically, it boils down to a disagreement about data sharing (check this out from TechCrunch if you’re so inclined), though there are whispers that Mailchimp is planning to launch its own light ecommerce platform in the near future. Scandalous! Watch this space.

While the WHY may be an unfolding story, the question on everyone’s lips is ––

How Will the Split Affect MY Business?

Long story short: Mailchimp-Shopify integration will cease to function on May 12, 2019.

What this means is product linking in Mailchimp email campaigns, and automated emails linked to your online store (such as abandoned cart emails etc.) will no longer work.

Our professional summary of this is: what a pain in the arse. A lot of our clients really dig this functionality and it serves them well in their email marketing and funnels. If this is you, fear not. It’s not as bad as it all sounds, and you ultimately don’t have to lose the functions you love just because Shopify and Mailchimp can’t just kiss and make up.

There ARE Simple Solutions!

We have a range of simple solutions available to help your business manage this change.

For some of you, the best option may be to switch email platforms, and transfer your current lists/ audiences and email campaign templates to a new system that works with Shopify.

For others, the best solution may be to set up a suitable third party app that talks to both Shopify and Mailchimp without them needing to be linked directly. There are a number of third party integrations available in a range of price points, and if you’re not sure which is going to best meet your needs, feel free to contact our team.

We’ve been knee-deep in testing since rumours of the split began to circulate, so have a good handle on the best tried-and-true options now that things have been made official. We’ve also been utilising a number of alternative platforms and integrations for clients with needs beyond Shopify and Mailchimp for the last couple of years and can confirm they work great!
